Screensaver question
Asked by galegovision on September 16, 2026 - 4 replies
Would it be possible to have a youtube video (link) play as a screensaver/2nd monitor. For example, I use two screens and would like to have screen 1 be the interface, play some muisc and have screen 2 play a youtube video as a background. There would be no sound for this youtube video.
My scenario would be, while I'm playing some disney music, I would have the 2nd screen playing a youtube video, a link to a live stream of the WDW today channel that many people broadcast through youtube. I know that is a very specific example but just something I thought would be cool.
Also, sorry for being that pain in the you know what users who keeps posting this kind of stuff in the forums. Just been a die hard users for 10 years and super excited to have the new version with all the features I've been wanting for all those years.
Thanks

Hi,
First of all: please don't apologize. Ten years of using something and still wanting more from it is the best feedback we get, and this kind of post is genuinely useful to us.
Now, the good news: a large part of what you describe already works today.
Screen 2 can be given its own permanent background that runs completely independently of screen 1 - it stays up while the music plays, and it is silent by design (a background video never plays its own sound, so it can never land on top of your Disney music). Here is how:
Administration → System & machine → Screens → pick screen 2 → "Shows on this screen" → "Your own image or video (always)" → then choose your file under "Image or video file".
So if you have a video file, you can have exactly the setup you describe tonight - screen 1 as the interface with the music, screen 2 as a silent looping background.
The part we cannot do yet is your actual example: a live YouTube stream as that background. A file we can loop forever; a live stream has to be kept alive - the connection has to be renewed, and we have to handle it gracefully when the broadcast ends or the internet drops, so you are never left looking at a black screen. That is the real work, and it is worth doing properly rather than half.
We like the idea a lot, and we have started looking into it: letting that background come from YouTube as well as from a file, ideally picked from the sources you have already saved in the YouTube centre rather than typed in as a link. We can't promise a date yet, but it is on the list - and your example is exactly the kind of thing that makes a feature worth building.

When I was testing if I could add a "live" youtube link into the Youtube section of the app I did run into a little weird problem. In Admnistration, Youtube plugin, I added in the link to the video, it found the channel and added it. For some reason, even if I up the amount of videos to pull in to 100, I can't see that video. I can see other videos that have the "live" designation on it from that channel. If it helps, this is the video I was trying my test with.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong I just not realizing? Guess I assumed we could add a single youtube video and not the whole channel?
Thanks

Hi @galegovision
When you paste a video link in the YouTube settings, the app adds the video's channel as a source, not the single video. It then shows the channel's uploaded videos. Some of that channel's live videos are listed among its uploads, but this 24/7 stream isn't, so it never appears in the YouTube section, no matter how many videos you pull in.
The good news: we've just released version 6.0.29, and it can show a YouTube video, including a live stream, on an extra screen. That's the right place for a stream like this one. To set it up:
- Go to Administration → Screens.
- On the screen you want to use, set what it shows to Your own image or video (always), or to Your own image or video (only when nothing plays) if you only want it when no music is playing.
- Tap Choose video.
- At the bottom of the window, under Or paste a link, paste the same address you sent us:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LqPzc9bYe0
- Tap Use, then Apply.
The screen will then show the same live stream you see on youtube.com. It plays without sound and at a slightly lower quality, so the machine stays free for the music. If the stream drops out for a while, the screen shows your background in the meantime and picks the stream up again by itself.
One tip: if you tap your way into one of your channels in that window, the link field isn't shown there. Just go back to the first page of the window and you'll find it at the bottom.
